hololive Production (ホロライブプロダクション Hororaibu Purodakushon), or simply known as hololive (ホロライブ), is a Virtual Idol agency consisting of Virtual YouTubers supported and created by Cover Corp.
History[]
2016[]
Cover Corp was formed 13 June, 2016, by Motoaki Tanigo, who formerly created games with Sanrio at the content company of Imagineer. The company first focused on virtual and augmented reality software, which was funded by Tokyo VR Startups and Recruit.
2017[]
At the end of March, Cover Corps showcased a tech demo of a program that enables real-time avatar motion capture and two-way livestreaming.
During this year, Tanigo was inspired to create a virtual idol group, similar to AKB48. He also stated that his idea was inspired by other virtual characters such as Hatsune Miku.
On 7 September, Cover Corps debuted their first VTuber, namely "Tokino Sora". 3 months after, Cover opened auditions for its second VTuber, "Roboco".
2018[]
On 4 March, Roboco debuted as Cover's second VTuber. A month after, Cover released an update for their 'Hololive' app, which removed its AR feature, but added a feature that allows mapping of a user's facial movement onto animated avatars in real-time. This enabled in-home auditions, which allows Cover to open auditions for five new characters that would become hololive's first generation of VTubers.
The first generation debuted from May to June. A second generation followed on August to September.
On 15 December, Cover then debuted AZKi, a VTuber not affiliated in a generation, who focuses on music.
A group of VTubers focusing on let's plays, known as "Hololive Gamers", debuted on December to April 2019.
A daily 3D anime short featuring Sakura Miko was released on 25 December, titled "Miko no Tsutome!". Due to its success, a second series titled "Holo no Grafitti", began its weekly release in YouTube a year after.
2019[]
On 8 January, Hololive announced that they have signed a contract with Bilibili, a Chinese streaming platform, where they would open 15 channels that would simultaneously stream there and on YouTube. They later opened audition for their Chinese branch of Hololive VTubers.
On 19 May, Cover formed a music label, titled "Inonaka Music" (stylized as INNK Music), with AZKi and Hoshimachi Suisei joining as its members.
The first generation of Holostars, a male branch of Hololive VTubers, made its debut from 8 June to 20 October.
On 31 June, 2019, Cover Corps announced the start of the audition for the third generation of hololive VTubers, called hololive Fantasy (ホロライブファンタジー). Auditions started from 13 June until 23 June with the screening starting and ending a day later and the interviews from 14 June until 28 June.[1] During hololive karaoke party on 7 July, two of the members, Usada Pekora and Uruha Rushia, were announced.[2]
On 2 December, Cover consolidated all of its agency under a unified brand named "hololive Production". During the same month, a second generation of Holostars made its debut. Hoshimachi Suisei was also transferred to the main hololive branch at the same day, leaving AZKi as its sole member.
On 25 December, the fourth generation of hololive was announced.[3]
2020[]
On January 24th, hololive held its first concert in Toyosu Pit, called "Nonstop Story (ノンストップ・ストーリー)". The live concert featured everyone from Hololive up to its third generation.
On 20 March, hololive's Twitter account announced auditions, which were held from 20 to 30 March, for two new members.[4]
An Indonesian branch of hololive, titled "hololive Indonesia" was announced on 6 April, and debuted its first generation at the same month.
On April 23rd, hololive's English Twitter account announced the beginning of auditions for English speaking VTubers and that their official site would support said language.[5]
On 3 July, hololive Indonesia Twitter account announced auditions for its second generation, from 3 to 19 July.[6]
On 6 August, hololive's Twitter account announced the introduction of its fifth generation, none of whom were members open for audition during March.[7]
On 8 September, hololive's English Twitter account introduced the first members of "hololive English" and a new hololive English channel created to promote their content, with a creation date of 7 September.[8][9]
On 30 November, hololive's official Twitter account announced the start of auditions for VSingers for hololive English, auditions are open until 29 January JST.[10]
On 1 December, hololive's Indonesia Twitter account announced the debut dates of its second generation members.[11]
On 21-22 December, hololive had its online second virtual concert "Beyond the Stage" with Tokino Sora, Roboco, Sakura Miko, Hoshimachi Suisei, AZKi, and everyone from Hololive 1st Generation, Hololive 2nd Generation, Hololive GAMERS, Hololive 3rd Generation, and Hololive 4th Generation.
With the retirement of Rosalyn on 27 December, hololive China officially ended its activities.
2021[]
On 12 February, hololive English Twitter account announced the audition for its second generation, with the audition going from 12 February to 26 March.[12]
On 17 February, hololive released a teaser video of "hololive Alternative".[13] The singer of the video was Mori Calliope, as she also mentioned she wrote the lyrics of the song.[14] Rumors from fans reveals it would be either an upcoming video game, anime or a manga series from hololive.
On 6 July, the hololive English channel teased it's first VSinger, IRyS during a small introductory video.[15] She debuted on 11 July.
On 16 August, the hololive English YouTube Channel premiered a video titled 【Debut PV】Council ｜#holoCouncil, announcing a new generation of hololive English, - Council -. The members were Tsukumo Sana, Ouro Kronii, Ceres Fauna, Nanashi Mumei, and Hakos Baelz. They all debuted on the same day; 22 August.
On 26 November, the hololive X (Formerly Twitter) announced a new branch of hololive known as The Secret Society holoX.[16] There were five members, La+ Darknesss, Takane Lui, Hakui Koyori, Sakamata Chloe, and Kazama Iroha. La+ debuted on the same day, Lui debuted on the 27, Koyori debuted on the 28, Chloe debuted on the 29, and Iroha debuted on the 30.[17]

On 26 July, hololive announced a new hololive English generation, known as - Advent -, with a YouTube video on the hololive English channel, titled 【#holoAdvent】WANTED!【hololive English New Unit Debut PV】. The members were Shiori Novella, Koseki Bijou, Nerissa Ravencroft, Fuwawa Abyssgard, and Mococo Abyssgard. Fuwawa and Mococo were the first hololive members to share a channel together. They are known as FUWAMOCO. Shiori and Bijou debuted on the 29, Nerissa, Fuwawa, and Mococo debuted on the 30.

In late January, hololive released a new series of merchandise titled hololive Seasonal Days (abbreviated to HSD). The first merchandise released was for Valentine's Day, and was titled hololive Valentine's Day ~ Message for You ~, featurning Hoshimachi Suisei, Kazama Iroha, AZKi, Hakui Koyori, Ichijou Ririka, and Shirakami Fubuki.
The second release of hololive Seasonal Days was for easter, titled Sweet Spring Easter.[18]
During hololive SUPER EXPO 2025, hololive announced their first mobile game DREAMS. An episode of Holo no Grafitti was released shortly after advertising it.[19]
On 11 April, hololive officialy released hololive English - Advent -'s 3D Models on their NicoNico 3D Solid.
hololive announced a Star Wars collab that would be featuring Himemori Luna, Inugami Korone, and Shirogane Noel. The stream would take place on 3 May 2025, at 7pm JST. It was streamed on Korone's channel.
Inonaka Music[]
Inonaka Music (イノナカミュージック; also shortened as INNK MUSIC) is a music label under hololive that launched on 19 May 2019.[20] Currently, AZKi is the only VTuber affiliated with the label as Hoshimachi Suisei, who started activities under Inonaka, was transferred to the main hololive group on 1 December 2019.[21][22]

- As of November 2019, the total number of subscribers for the VTubers on YouTube and bilibili are 2.6 million and 3.5 million, respectively, with four of the VTubers getting into the top 10 spots for VTubers on bilibili: Shirakami Fubuki (2nd), Minato Aqua (5th), Natsuiro Matsuri (7th), and Akai Haato (9th).[27] (Last updated in April 2019 for bilibili top 10 spots). As of 2021, hololive's total number of subscribers on YouTube surpassed the mark of 27 million with its branch in bilibili inactive since October 2020.
